Follow up

And just to follow up with a comment about my earlier post regarding Cheney. I remember when I wrote it thinking that people might accuse me of reading too much into the words of one his minions (even if that minion was his spokesminion).

However, last week good ol' Dead-eye Dick confirmed my faith in his faithlessness by making the comment that the Bush Administration would continue in its policies in Iraq whatever the outcome of the mid-term elections.

I think that about says it all.

Mission Accomplished...

my ass!

It is absolutely necessary that Bush and all his henchman be brought to justice if for no other reason than that they have bankrupted the United States of America. If we do not do that, if we do not drag every single crime of theirs into the daylight, if we do not shine a glaring spotlight on every god-damned dime stolen by Halliburton, the Lincoln Group, and every other Abramoff client, then the Democrats are going to take the fall for the economic problems that must necessarily follow.

If you doubt me, look at the headlines this morning: Market uncertainty following Dem win. That is the set up. Markets don't like the Dems because they are (only slightly) more likely to hold business accountable and to make them pay for the services provided to them by their government.

Folks, even with the best of intentions, it is going to cost us - you and me and all the rest of us - billions upon billions of dollars to extricate ourselves from Iraq. And we are already billions (or is it trillions?) in debt to China, Japan, and every other nation foolish enough to have lent money to Junior. Just servicing the debt on this, George W. Bush's biggest and most destructive binge, will require a massive effort on all our part. And if we do not clearly fix the blame, if we allow ourselves to say "Let us let bygones be bygones. We have won the Congress and are well positioned for a run at the White House in 2008. Let us not stir the shit." If we do that, then as sure as you are reading these words, the Democrats will have the albatross of the recession that must follow as surely as night follows day hung about their collective neck and the neocons will slip back in and complete the job they have begun.

Let it be done

I think this one about sums up what we are up against. I mean, a few years ago, Arlen (how scary is my name?) Specter was a pillar of the conservative establishment. Now, however, thanks to Bush and Cheney and Company, the Honorable Senator from the Keystone State has become our last bulwark against a creeping Unitary Executive (NewSpeak for dictatorship).

You can read about the latest confrontation between the forces of evil and not so evil here.

What caught my in this piece, though, was not the conflict between Cheney and Specter but a little comment made by Cheney's spokeswoman:

"We're going to continue to work with members, listening to their
legislative ideas," Ms. McBride said, although she added that it was
"not necessary to have legislation to carry out the terrorist
surveillance program."

I mean, doesn't that say it all? Legislation is not necessary. And if legislation is not needed, what use judges? Welcome to the New American Century and government by fiat.

Impeach the President Now

I have just read the latest piece from Elizabzeth Holtzman on AlterNet. It is a rational, measured call for the president's impeachment from a woman who served on the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate. Required reading.
